The audacity and temerity displayed by the American Embassy over the arrest of gay champions is a vivid manifestation that Zambia is dancing to their apron strings which is an assault on the sovereignty of the country, former defence Minister George Mpombo has said.
Dr. Mpombo said at the rate things were unfolding, actions of the United States of America would make Zambia a pariah nation within the SADC region.
He said Zambia would be treated with a lot of suspicion and apprehension within the region which would affect the country negatively.
Dr. Mpombo said the UPND government has not taken a stern position on LGBT issues because they want to maintain the relationship that they have built with the western world.
He said in as much as the country wants to maintain a good relationship with the western world for aid, it does not need to come at the expense of selling the values and morals of the country.
Dr Mpombo said Zambia was a Christian nation and there was no need to change that position because of aid.
“What is happening has severe consequences on our country and the future. Government must realise that Zambians want them to take a very stern stance homosexual activities that have the potential to erode the moral campus of the nation,” he said.
He said the government must realise that they derived legitimacy to run this country from the people of Zambia and if they say no to something then they are obliged to follow what they people want.
Dr Mpombo said people should be wary why organizations were willing to pump in a lot of money into something that does not add value to the development of mankind.
