Police arrest one over Bangweulu accident

POLICE have arrested and charged one individual of Chishi Island for allegedly causing the death of 14 Seventh Day Adventist Church members who drowned on Lake Bangweulu.

Northern Province Police Commissioner Gloria Mulele said Joseph Chipasha 28 of Chishi Island had been charged with 14 counts of causing death by dangerous and reckless navigation contrary to section 23(1D) Cap 466.

Ms Mulele said Chipasha was also charged with one count of carrying an unathorised number of passengers contrary to section 23 (2b) Cap 466 of the laws of Zambia.

She said Mr Chipasha was out on police bond and was expected to appear in court on April 21,  2023.

Ms Mulele said that the police were working frantically to sensitise people on the lake not to engage in illegal ferrying of pasengers and even overloading to avoid similar incidents as the Bangweulu debacle.

Recently, a vessel ferrying 44 SDA members who were going for a church gathering capsized on Lake Bangweulu and 14 lost their lives while 30  survived after being assisted by on lookers on the lake at the time the incident occurred.
