Authoritarianism now disguising itself as democracy – Chirwa

AUTHOTARIANISM has increasingly started disguising itself as democracy and is undoing all the good work of egalitarianism so far achieved in the recent decades, Joan Chirwa has observed.

Reflecting on the International Day of Democracy (IDD) which fell on September 15 2024, Ms Chirwa has called for the need to allow the growth of free speech and let democratic principles to be upheld worldwide.

She said leaders claiming to be democrats were continuously disregarding press freedom and freedom of expression, the two key elements upon which democracy across the globe was fundamentally anchored.
