I will reduce cost of living once in government – Kalaba

BARNABAS ZULU

THE first thing I will do when elected as president of Zambia is to sort out the high cost of living and ensure that every Zambian has three square meals a day, Mr Harry Kalaba has promised.

Mr Kalaba, who is the Citizens First (CF) leader has accused the UPND government of plunging the country into the worst ever cost of living that Zambians have never witnessed.

“The first thing I will do as president is to sort out the cost of living. It is so shameful that a party like UPND which promised to reduce the cost of living has failed to do so. As Citizen First, we shall sort out this issue because it is the first thing on our agenda,” Mr Kalaba said.

“They (UPND) told the Zambian people that mealie meal will be K50, but today the commodity is more than K400, a situation that we have never seen before. So, we can assure the Zambian people that the mess created by President Hakainde Hichilema will be dealt with decisively,” he said.

Mr Kalaba further stated that President Hakainde Hichilema and his lieutenants should refrain from mocking Zambians that they have started reducing the cost of living.

“He must not be mocking hardworking Zambians that he has reduced the cost of living when everything is high. Most of the commodities he found them cheap but look where we are today. It’s mockery of the highest order for his stooges to claim that they have reduced the cost of living. Maybe they are living in different planet or a different country,” he said.

Mr Kalaba stated that once in government, he would endeavour to prioritise the interest of Zambians and ensure they lived a better life.

“In my government, Zambians will be the main priorities. He cannot be giving tax holidays to foreigners whilst his own people are languishing in poverty and squalor. This is an unacceptable and an unimaginable that people can be treated in this manner by a government which they elected themselves,” Mr Kalaba said.

Mazabuka UPND in internal strife

NATION REPORTER

THE UPND in Mazabuka has reportedly violently been divided after factions emerged after some officials in the districts decided to endorse President Hakainde Hichilema and their Member of Parliament Garry Nkombo for the 2026 general election.

The ruling party in the district has been engulfed with in-fighting and that so far, eight of the officials have been suspended for six months in what they have termed a decision made by the kangaroo court.

The suspension of the eight officials follows their participation in a press briefing, where they endorsed President Hichilema and and Nkombo as their preferred candidates for 2026 general election.

The endorsement of Mr Nkombo came soon after the Mazabuka law maker was fired as Local Government and Rural Development Minister.

According to Byta FM Radio, there were attempts by one faction to use maximum force on the District Disciplinary Committee to suspend eight district officials.

This was after the said officials endorsed President Hichilema and Mazabuka Central Member of Parliament, Gary Nkombo for the 2026 general election.

According to UPND Mazabuka district acting secretary, Ronald Mwiinga, some members in the executive committee harassed him at night for refusing to sign suspension letters for the eight officials.

He has named one of the official who stormed his residence with the suspension letters as Mazabuka Central Ward Councilor, who is also district youth vice chairperson for administration, Chrisphine Hamangaba.

Others named in the melee were Kaonga Ward Councilor who is also district youth vice chairperson for politics, Clifford Joleya, as well as district executive committee vice treasurer, Augustine Shabalima.

But UPND Mazabuka district vice chairperson political Clifford Joleya when contacted refuted claims by Mwiinga, describing them as baseless and unfounded.

Church Mother Bodies commend HH over efforts to unite the church

NATION REPORTER

THREE Church mother bodies, the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB), Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ), and the Independent Churches of Zambia (ICOZ) have welcomed President Hakainde Hichilema’s call for unity among all church groupings in the country.

Speaking in separate statements, the Church leaders have endorsed President Hichilema’s call that no denomination should be marginalized, emphasizing that unity among Christians was vital for national harmony and development. Fr Francis Mukosa, Secretary General of the ZCCB, said the President’s position reflects a much-needed inclusive spirit in the religious community.

“There is nothing wrong with having a united Church comprising all denominations, big and small. It is a good thing that the Head of State has said all churches are equal. No one should be sidelined, especially if they are operating legally,” Fr Mukosa said.

While Bishop Andrew Mwenda, Executive Director of EFZ, declined to elaborate further, he expressed appreciation that President Hichilema had acknowledged the presence and work of their fellowship.

“I can’t make an extensive comment on that. It is his perception, and I’m grateful that he knows we exist,” Bishop Mwenda said. “You cannot tell a pregnant woman that she is pregnant. We know ourselves.”

ICOZ President Bishop David Masupa also lauded the President’s gesture, noting it was a positive step toward healing divisions within the Christian community.

“The Church is not a cathedral. The Church does not look at market youths…God looks at the heart of a person. We have seen for the past 24 years that the Independent Churches of Zambia have often been marginalized, but they cannot marginalize what God has called.” He said ICOZ was in support of President Hichilema’s appeal for love, unity, and peace across the Church and the nation. “We will stand for unity, for peace, and for love. We will stand with the government of the day and support him for uniting the nation,” he said.

Bishop Masupa also cautioned against religious leaders who speak ill of others in pursuit of personal gain, particularly those seeking favors from State House.
