Flu antiviral baloxavir shows promise over other treatments for high-risk patients, shortening symptom duration

A systematic review and meta-analysis led by Shandong University in China has evaluated the comparative efficacy and safety of antiviral medications for treating nonsevere influenza. Findings indicate that baloxavir may reduce hospital admission risks for high-risk patients and shorten symptom duration without increasing adverse events. One factor in distinguishing baloxavir from other antivirals in the study was the quality of the data reviewed.

Study implicates another gene in the brain that causes weight gain

Mutations in a gene called OTP cause obesity by controlling the output of another gene already targeted by an anti-obesity drug, a study led by UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers shows. The findings, reported in Science Translational Medicine, could lead to new treatments for some types of obesity, a growing health problem that currently affects more than a billion people worldwide.
