ZAMBIA NOW FOOD INSECURE – SINKAMBA

ZAMBIA is likely to be food insecure for the first time in as many harvest seasons and that Zambians should be ready to have a scarcity of food for the next two to three years because the UPND government is using the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) maize stocks to stabilize mealie-meal prices, Green Party President Peter Sinkamba has said.

APATHY IS VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE

The apathy that characterized the three local government by-elections reflects a vote of no confidence against the UPND because Zambians are already fatigued by the lies of the new dawn administration and have moved on, Brebner Changala has observed.

LET’S GROW DEMOCRACY

Now that the dust has settled over Thursday’s local government by-elections, stakeholders must take stock of the violence that characterised the campaign period.

At stake were seats in the local councils in Serenje, Lupososhi and Chililabombwe.  All the seats were scooped by the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND),

In the run up to the election day violent incidents were reported particularly in Serenje and Chililabombwe involving cadres from the UPND, the Socialist Party and the Patriotic Front.

It is important that political players take it upon themselves to ensure that elections at what ever level do not dejenerate into violence.

Violence defeats the whole purpose of ensuring that people exercise their democratic right to choose leaders of their choice in a peaceful manner.

If anything, many eligible voters are in fact forced to stay away from the voting booths for fear of being caught up in the crossfire among the contending parties.

We thus call not only the political parties, but the Electoral Commission of Zambia and the Zambia Police Service to take stock on how the by-elections were held as well as investigate the violent incidents that were reported.

Serenje reported the worst form of violence in which suspected UPND cadres were said to have attacked their rivals from the Socialist Party.

We note that the Socialist Party leader, Dr Fred M’membe is being investigated for allegedly shooting a UPND cadre.

Of concern to the nation is that the fracas in Solwezi took place at a police station where the Socialist Party cadres had gone to report.

In Chililabombwe, UPND cadres were also reported to have tried to attack PF’s Bowman Lusambo and other leaders as they attended Mass at a Catholic Church.

Mr Lusambo was however whisked away from the church premises when some UPND cadres were spotted around.

These are incidents that the ECZ and the Police ought to investigate not just to ensure that the culprits are taken to task but also to draw lessons for the future.

Zambia has a proud record of holding peaceful national elections since independence in which power has changed hands without bloodshed.

This is a legacy that must be protected by all political players working with the relevant authorities to ensure that democratic tenets are upheld.

Thus, reports that some PF polling agents in the Chitimukulu local government by-election in Chililabombwe were on Thursday allegedly intimidated and physically abused, while others were expelled from polling stations by suspected UPND cadres in full view of police officers must be investigated.

They should not be dismissed as mere propaganda, especially when Cabinet Ministers are seen in the company of political hooligans.

As Linda Kasonde’s Chapter One Foundation notes, political violence robs citizens of being active participarnts in the affairs of their country.

Certainly, this is not the Zambia that anyone wants.

An honest and transparent review of Thursday’s by-elections is therefore a must for political violence has no place in the country.

Let’s grow democracy and peaceful co-existence.

Zodwa Wabantu removing a monkey from snake’s belly leaves Mzansi shook

Racy dancer Zodwa Wabantu got tongues wagging once again after she shared a video clip of herself removing the body of a monkey from a dead snake’s belly.

She simply captioned the post: “I don’t buy, ngiyazingela (I hunt).”

In the video clip, the “Zodwa Wabantu Uncensored” star is seen cutting through the dead snake’s skin and carefully proceeding to remove the animal, which the snake swallowed earlier.

And the man in the background is heard saying: “It’s a monkey.”

The video sparked a heated debate on social media with fans calling Wabantu out for encouraging “animal cruelty”.

Taking to her comments section, many expressed their shock at what they had just witnessed, while others strongly condemned the act of killing the snake, highlighting that pythons, in particular, are an endangered species.

An Instagram user who goes by the name of Veiko Pelao Petrus posed the question: “Why do you guys kill this snake ???? They don’t hurt you plus they will go extinct and what happens to the future generations. #sustainability #extinction #snakes this (is) cruelty.”

Another follower, Mosa Kitty Malumise, wrote: “What in the world did I just watch? Are you going to braai it?, phela I hear snake meat tastes like biltong ”

Chengeto Jange added: “Pythons are protected species. We don’t kill them . @sabcnewsonline, why are you killing a python sis Zo

Concerned Instagram user Dikotsi Sekatane asked: “But why kill innocent animals this is not right honestly ”

Instagram user, bujigirlbee, added: “Some things should just stay in your photo gallery we honestly didn’t ask to see this I love you but this is too much now feels like you’re doing this just for clout! I couldn’t even watch the whole thing.”

Wabantu has received a lot of flak since she came out as a traditional healer last year, with many questioning the legitimacy of her gift.

Poet and musician Ntsiki Mazwai was among many who criticised her for continuing to dance half-naked after she had accepted her gift of traditional healing.

“One can’t be a professional stripper and a sangoma… There two azihlangani…..Stop undermining and disrespecting African spirituality,” tweeted Mazwai.

In a previous interview with IOL Entertainment, the Soweto-born star confirmed that she had embarked on a special spiritual journey but she was not a sangoma nor was she set to become one.

“I have recently accepted a calling but this is a different kind of ubizo (calling). I’m not a sangoma. I am Inkosazana ya Manzi,” revealed the star.

Wabantu’s mentor and spiritual leader, Dr Mhlaba of Kwa-Mhlaba Traditional Healers, shed light on what it means to be an Inkosazana ya Manzi.

“There is this thing with us traditional healers, the people that God has given certain gifts … that we want to initiate everybody and make them sangomas even when they have different gifts,” said Mhlaba.

He revealed that Wabantu was born with this gift of success.

“This gift is Mndawu, it’s what you come to earth with from birth. People with this gift or blessing have doors just opening up for them.”

“Even when people try to bewitch them, nothing happens to them. They are just protected by their good guardian angel.

He added: “So with that blessing, you go somewhere and accept it. It’s a clean, white spirit. It’s a spirit from God and it stays in the water when that ancestor dies and looks after you.

“Zodwa had to go to the water to acknowledge the spirit and be cleansed so that it can live peacefully in her,” explained Mhlaba.

From her wild, sultry dance moves, to touching her private parts and sniffing her fingers in public to letting fans grope her on stage, nothing will ever come as a shock to Mzansi where Zodwa Wabantu is concerned.

Chisamba council warns illegal land sellers

By NOEL IYOMBWA

CHISAMBA Town Council has warned of stern action against people engaging in illegal selling of land in the district.

Chisamba town council public relations officer Nakubiana Shabongo said there is a growing trend of illegal land allocation in the district.

Ms Shabongo noted that the vice is resulting into serious encroachment and prohibiting development

“Projects earmarked for development have been affected. We have received reports that some named individuals are in the forefront of this illegality and we have identified some people linked to this matter which we will deal with. All those collecting money from the public on pretext that they have land offers should stop or face prosecution,” she warned.

Ms Shabongo warned members of public to refrain from buying land from people masquerading as custodians of land in the district.

She said any person buying land from unscrupulous people risk throwing their money into ventures where it would never be recovered.

Ms Shabongo stated that the law prohibits illegal allocation of land and that the local authority will ensure it protects people from being swindled through land illegalities.

She urged would be buyers to follow procedure in the acquisition of land as all legal allocations are done at the ministry of land and local government.

Ms Shabongo has since appealed to members of public to report matters surrounding illegal land allocation.

She added that council alone could not manage to fight the vice but with the help of the community.

Meanwhile a resident of ten miles has called on government to regulate real estate companies in Chibombo district and surrounding areas.

Enock Mwanja said the mushrooming real estate’s companies has led to the illegal selling of land.

Mr Mwanja disclosed that many people are being swindled by real estate agents.

“These people will not tell you that they don’t have land as a result they sell one piece of land to more than two or three people. “Sometimes they will tell you the land is just few kilometers from the road but in the actual sense it far.

“Government should do something before more people are swindled,” he said.
