As little as 25 minutes a day of slow walking seems to be enough to counter the detrimental physical effects of bed rest on older hospital patients, finds a pooled data analysis of the available evidence, published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
Mortality gap found in 3,110 counties across 5 racial-ethnic groups, 19 causes and 20 years
An analysis of 19 causes of death in the United States has revealed persistent disparities and a familiar pattern across five racial-ethnic groups and 3,110 counties from 2000 to 2019. That’s according to peer-reviewed research published today in The Lancet.
Risk of overdose higher when opioid agonists are prescribed with other medicines
Patients prescribed medicines to replace illicit drugs are at higher risk of overdose resulting in hospital admission when taking other medicines which treat mental health conditions or pain, University of Manchester researchers have found.
Outdoor air pollution may increase non-lung cancer risk in older adults
Chronic exposure to fine particulate air pollutants (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) may increase non-lung cancer risk in older adults, according to a study led by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. In a cohort study of millions of Medicare beneficiaries, the researchers found that exposures to PM2.5 and NO2 over a 10-year period increased the risk of developing colorectal and prostate cancers. The researchers also found that even low levels of air pollution exposure may make people particularly susceptible to developing these cancers, in addition to breast and endometrial cancers.

Serum copeptin and urinary aquaporin-2 (AQP2) levels are significantly lower in children with primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (PMNE), according to a study published in the International Journal of Urology.
Genetic evidence supports causal effect for diastolic BP on benign prostatic hyperplasia
There is genetic evidence supporting a causal effect of diastolic blood pressure (DBP) on benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), according to a study published online July 16 in The Prostate.
Serum ammonia, hospital mortality linked in ICU cirrhosis patients

How sensory neurons impact the gut
Gastrointestinal and digestive issues impact roughly 3 million people across the United States alone, and that number is growing. A new study from Scripps Research scientists shows how sensory neurons control our gastrointestinal tracts—critical information that could shape our understanding of related diseases and disorders.
