THE decision by the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) to do a countrywide teacher qualification audit is a step in the right direction.

Scientists have identified a protein that plays a pivotal role in the action of several emerging cancer therapies. The researchers say the discovery will likely aid efforts to fine-tune the use of immunotherapies against several challenging cancers. They report their findings in the journal Cancer Research. The paper is titled, “Plasma membrane channel TRPM4 mediates immunogenic therapy-induced necrosis.”

Scientists at Stanford University have found a way to induce cell death in cancer cells with a method that could be effective in around 50% of cancers. In a paper, “Rewiring cancer drivers to activate apoptosis,” published in Nature, the team describes a new class of molecules called transcriptional/epigenetic CIPs (TCIPs) that can activate apoptosis with the help of cancer growth gene expressions within the cancer cells.

Since the discovery of hallmark features of senescence such as cell cycle arrest, apoptosis resistance and development of a senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), efforts in understanding how senescent cells drive physiological and pathological aging have grown exponentially. The accumulation of senescent cells in aging individuals is associated with increased occurrence of age-associated pathologies that contribute to poor health, frailty, and mortality.
