New cholera substrains in Bangladesh uncovered by genomic surveillance confirm the importance of vaccination

Researchers have uncovered two new cholera substrains in a displaced refugee population in southern Bangladesh, where a pre-emptive mass vaccination campaign of over one million refugees was successful in preventing an epidemic. They also showed that the cholera bacterium initiating this campaign was the high risk pandemic strain that has caused outbreaks of cholera globally.

Concentrations of PGE2 molecule in the brain linked to both weight loss and weight gain

A team of medical researchers at Memorial University, in Canada, has found evidence showing that concentrations of the PGE2 molecule in the brain can lead to both weight loss and weight gain depending on the amount. In their study, reported in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the group tested the impact of changes in concentrations of the PGE2 molecule in the hypothalamus in rats and mice.

Gene therapy to restore color vision in complete achromatopsia patients shows modest improvement

Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, have attempted to restore color vision to completely color-blind subjects using gene therapy. In their paper, “Seeing color following gene augmentation therapy in Achromatopsia,” published in Current Biology, the team details the approach’s success and limitations on achromatopsia patients lacking a functioning CNGA3 gene.
