The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) is a systematic study that compares the magnitude of health losses to various diseases and injuries worldwide. Disability weights are crucial for quantifying health loss associated with non-fatal outcomes and were not well assessed in different countries, especially for specific cancer. Therefore, this study aimed to identify disability weights with a focus on specific cancer in a large Chinese population.

New comprehensive review of biochemical markers of bone fragility in diabetes

The risk of fragility fractures is increased in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. While guidance for the evaluation and management of fracture risk in these patients has been recently proposed by an International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) working group, a new review now examines a range of biochemical markers, and considers their potential role in helping clinicians further evaluate fracture risk.

A new mechanism may lead to new treatment options for chronic kidney diseases

Chronic kidney disease is a growing problem both in Denmark and internationally. Now, a new study from Aarhus University reveals that a protein known for treating cardiovascular diseases also counteracts a mechanism in the kidney that reabsorbs proteins. This could potentially lead to new treatment options. The paper is published in the journal Kidney International.

New study links gum disease to buildup of Alzheimer’s plaque formation

Although most people don’t associate oral disease with serious health problems, increasing evidence shows that oral bacteria play a significant role in systemic diseases like colon cancer and heart disease. Now, new research from the Forsyth Institute shows a link between periodontal (gum) disease and the formation of amyloid plaque, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease.

Study finds significant increase in chronic anxiety and depressive symptoms in young adults

Since the coronavirus outbreak, the number of young adults with moderate to severe chronic anxiety and depressive symptoms has increased sharply. In the year before the pandemic 16.7% of 18- to 24-year-olds suffered from moderate to severe chronic anxiety and depressive symptoms. They were experiencing these complaints in March 2019, November 2019 and in March 2020. In the year after the pandemic, this had increased to 21.4%. This translates to an increase of about 73,000 young adults.
