A major new study confirms the trend toward fewer suicides in Europe. The findings show that suicide rates are down in 15 countries (including Germany and Italy), and stable elsewhere (including France, Spain and U.K.). Only Turkey shows a significant increase. This work is presented for the first time at the European Congress of Psychiatry in Paris, taking place March 25–28.
Experts use new microscope, AI algorithm, and voltage indicators to image electrical activity deep in the brain
When studying the brain, researchers are just beginning to use a method known as voltage imaging to track neural activity in the living animal. While this approach is a promising way to better understand neuron firing, behavior, and cognition, there are limitations and risk factors. The practice requires putting a lot of light into the brain (which can lead to overheating) and only has the capacity to image ten neurons at a time.
Declare Sugilite, Gold as national assets
BY VITA BANDA
OPPOSITION Golden Party President Jackson Silavwe says there is need for president Hakainde Hichilema to declare Sugilite and Gold a state asset to be mined by the Zambia National service.
Mr Silavwe adds that the traditional Foreign Direct Investments (FDI’s) President Hakainde Hichilema is concentrating on right now end up leaving the country in huge amounts surpassing the initial investments, leaving us poorer and stagnant economically.
He says KCM was bought by Vedanta for $25 million and made hundreds/billions of dollars which they externalized and declared losses to the Government and as such ZNS should mine Sugilite.
Mr Silavwe says to declare Sugilite and Gold National state assets the President will only need a simple majority in Parliament for a bill to be passed into law, hence avoiding the Constitutional two thirds majority which involves the opposition in Parliament and UPND has the numbers to pass any bill in Parliament already.
He says once the President declares gold and sugilite as National assets to be mined by ZNS, GPZ can help him (in National interest) to get that $1 Billion per year if he needs the party’s input further
Is early rhythm control in atrial fibrillation care cost-effective?
Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) benefit from early rhythm control therapy. It reduces cardiovascular deaths, strokes, and other adverse outcomes by 20% compared to usual care. The beneficial effects of early rhythm control were shown by the pan-European EAST—AFNET 4 trial and confirmed by other large health studies. However, what is the price of the new treatment strategy? A cost-effectiveness analysis has revealed that the health benefits of early rhythm control come at reasonable additional costs. The analysis was published today in EP Europace.
Study reveals that art has a powerful effect on people’s bodies and emotions
A new study from the University of Turku and Aalto University in Finland published in the journal Cognition & Emotion reveals that art has a powerful effect on people’s bodies and emotions.
Researchers delve into the mechanisms of hereditary spastic paraplegia
Researchers from the University of Seville and the Seville Institute of Biomedicine (IBiS), in collaboration with the University of Cambridge, have identified a new role for one of the genes related to hereditary spastic paraplegia. This disease is characterized by symptoms such as spasticity, paralysis and/or lack of sensation.
Positive results for combination of ribociclib and letrozole in patients with recurrent low-grade serous ovarian cancer
The GOG Foundation, Inc. (GOG) announced positive results from an investigator-initiated phase II trial, sponsored by the GOG, investigating the combination of ribociclib and letrozole in patients with recurrent low-grade serous ovarian cancer (LGSOC) (GOG-3026). The results were presented at The Society of Gynecologic Oncology’s 2023 Annual Meeting on Women’s Cancer in Tampa, Florida.
Patients with septic shock benefit from a combination of hydrocortisone-fludrocortisone therapy
Sepsis occurs in approximately 1.7 million hospitalizations in the U.S. with in more than a third of hospitalizations resulting in death. Patients with septic shock benefit from steroid medications (corticosteroids) to reduce shock duration and potentially decrease the chance of dying. However, it is unclear if one of the two main frequently used steroid regimens (hydrocortisone alone versus hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone together) is better than the other regimen.
Components of cytoskeleton found to strengthen effect of sex hormones
Researchers from Freiburg and Kiel discovered that actin acts in the cell nucleus and is partly responsible for the expression of male sexual characteristics
Exploring the neural mechanisms behind how social networks shape our decisions
Over the past decade or so, social scientists have been trying to understand how social networks can influence people’s beliefs and behavior. Despite the many studies on this topic, currently very little is known about how the human brain makes decisions in networked environments, when humans share their views with one another.
