Delivering more compassionate care in intensive care medicine
In the intensive care unit (ICU), critically ill patients are cared for by a multidisciplinary care team. Compassionate and caring behaviors on the part of the care team result in better outcomes for patients and their families, and care providers entering the demanding field of medicine because they wish to help people and relieve suffering. However, studies have demonstrated deficiencies in delivering compassionate health care. Evidence suggests that physicians may miss up to 90% of opportunities to respond to patients with compassion.

Police after me- Nawakwi
By NATION REPORTER
EDITH Nawakwi has claimed that a platoon of the Zambia Police has set camp at her residence in a bid to arrest her for unknown reasons but that she has been briefed that she is being wanted for the offence of hate speech.
Ms Nawakwi, president of the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) president has said in an interview that the police have been camping at her house in an effort to arrest her for unknown reasons while she was away at her farm.
Ms. Nawakwi said she started receiving phone calls last week from her worker that the police were frequenting her work residence to deliver a summons for her to appear before law enforcement agents at Police Headquarters.

Ms Nawakwi explained that since she was away at her farm, her worker declined to receive the summons on her behalf for fear that the police would claim the summons were delivered to her and effect an arrest.
Ms. Nawakwi said with the persistence of the police, the workers were forced to direct the police at her residence where they decided to set camp in a bid to lay an ambush and arrest her.
“They went to my house but my security officer told them that I had travelled to the farm. In disbelief they were busy piping around the windows at my house. The police have been camped at my residence in a bid to arrest me for unknown reasons. They sent a call out summoning me but they did not find me as I was at the farm and my worker refused to receive the call out on my behalf,” Ms Nawakwi said.
She said when she arrived at her residence, the security officer narrated how the police officers used to set camp in the morning at her residence every other day with the hope of seeing ambushing her with an arrest.
Ms Nawakwi said since her return from the farm, the police have not furnished her with the summons but that the grapevine had informed her that she was being wanted for hate speech.
She said it was shocking that the police wanted to arrest her for hate speech just for branding President Hakainde Hichilema as a man who was not brought up well because of the way he was issuing reckless statements against his predecessor former President Edgar Lungu.
Ms. Nawakwi has also dispelled rumors that she was on the run as she had only traveled to her farm for her usual business.
She said the police were welcome to serve her with the call out as she was back home and as a law-abiding citizen, she would appear before the police without fail.
Ms. Nawakwi accused President Hichilema of trying to use the police to silence her but vowed she would never stop speaking whenever the head of State transgressed against Zambians by demonizing former President Lungu. But when contacted for a comment, police deputy spokesperson Danny Mwale said he was not aware of any summon that was sent to Ms. Nawakwi.
“Am not aware of this and may be this information has not just reached my table yet, I will try and inquire,” Mr Mwale said.

Be transparent in deals struck for the country, HH urged
FEIRA Member of Parliament Emmanuel Tembo has called on President Hakainde Hichilema to be transparent in the memorandum of understandings and the other deals that he signs and makes on behalf of the Zambians.
President Hichilema recently signed an MoU for the putting up the Africom in Zambian where the contents have not been disclosed to Zambians.
Mr Tembo says the President needs to understand that he was elected to govern the country on behalf of Zambians and he owes them an explanation for every MOU that he signs on their behalf.
He says it’s unfortunate that the UPND government has chosen not to be transparent to the Zambians who elected them into office.
Some of the deals struck so far include the construction of the Lusaka-Ndola dual carriage way estimated to cost nearly US$600 million, as well awarding of an audit deal of the defence forces to a private company, a matter which opposition leaders have described as illegal.

No AfCON for U-23
By MICHAEL MIYOBA
THE Zambia Under-23 national team has failed to qualify for the 2023 Morocco Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a 2-0 aggregate defeat to North African giants Egypt.
After losing 2-0 beating in the first leg of the final qualifying round played on Tuesday night in Cairo, the Junior Chipolopolo were held to a goalless draw in the reverse fixture played yesterday at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
The Young Pharaohs had scored two second half goals to beat Zambia 2-0 in Cairo on Wednesday night thanks to goals from Ibrahim Adel and Abdurahman Atef.
In the home fixture played in Ndola, Zambia needed to score three unanswered goals to realise the dream of qualifying for the continental championship.
However, the Junior Chipolopolo who earlier watched the senior squad humiliate Lesotho 2-0 in South Africa, struggled to bounce back from the defeat recorded in Cairo to miss out on the AFCON which will be used as a qualifier for the 2024 Olympic Games.
The Junior Chipolopolo created few chances in both halves of the game as John Kosamu had the first attempt at goal with a shot which went over the bar.
Midfielder Miguel Chaiwa had an opportunity to redeem Zambia’s hopes a minute after the half hour mark but sent his freekick straight into the Egyptian wall.
In the second half, Power Dynamos speedy winger Joshua Mutale came close to breaking the deadlock but his strike could not bother Egypt’s young goalkeeper Hamza Hussein as it went over the bar.
As Zambia continued to hunt for goals, coach Osward Mutapa withdrew John Kosamu for Mannah Chiwisa while Happy Nsiku paved way for Martin Njobvu as Joshua Mutale was replaced by Jimmy Mukeya.
Mukeya came close in the 73rd minute with an attempt which went wide as Egypt held on to get a crucial draw and qualify for the 2023 AFCON.
