Doctors reject govt excuse – as Govt remains mute over 10.5 percent increment

By NATION REPORTER

DOCTORS countrywide are in limbo over Government’s position regarding their demand for a 10.5 percent salary increment despite issuing an ultimatum.

The Resident Doctors Association of Zambia (RDAZ) has said that they were still in a state of uncertainty despite several meetings with the government.

And Zambia Medical Association (ZMA) General-Secretary Kaumba Tolopu said the doctors did not agree with the government’s explanation that they did not qualify for a salary increase since they are considered to be in managerial positions.

Dr Tolopu said it was unfair because other civil servants who were in managerial positions were beneficiaries of the 10.5 percent salary increment.

He said they had a meeting with the Permanent Secretary at the Public Service Management Division who relayed the information to Secretary to Cabinet, Patrick Kangwa.

Dr Tolopu said the reason advanced by the government indicated that they were left out because they were considered to be in managerial positions did not hold water.

“We have individuals that are in managerial positions that received the 10.5 percent salary increment so the excuse they are giving does not make sense,” he said.

Dr Tolopu said they were waiting for a written correspondence from Mr Kangwa to guide them on the way forward.

He said it was shocking that government was silent over the matter and that doctors would go ahead with the sit-in planned for March 1, 2023.

By press time, efforts to get a comment from Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Lackson Kasonka proved futile as his phone went unanswered.

Agriculture minister predicts low crop yields

By SHERRY CHABALA

Minister of Agriculture, Reuben Phiri has predicted low crop yields this year due to the flash floods that have hit some parts of the country.

Mr Phiri told Millennium TV in an interview that due to flash floods, most crop fields had been destroyed, which would negatively affect the 2022-2023 harvest.

“Right now, we are receiving indications from the Meteorological Department that in the coming seven days or so, we are going to have heavy rains in the country apart from Western Province. So in most of the areas, we are going to have quite some rains pouring apart from Western Province.

“We already have high moisture content in our soils and so, whatever rain are going to come, the chances of it causing some flash floods are very high. This means that some of the fields that could have been saved from the previous floods that we had, could still be affected,” Mr Phiri said.

He said Government would at an appropriate time deploy experts to establish the extent of the damage to crop fields caused by the flash floods.

“We will still go out there and check, we will continuously check on how much damage has been done,” Mr Phiri said.

UPND behind PF squabbles – Mpombo

The action by Patriotic Front (PF) presidential aspirant, Miles Sampa to commence contempt proceedings against PF leaders portrays him as a hired gun by the UPND to destabilize the main opposition party, former minister of Defence George Mpombo has said.

Dr Mpombo in an interview said the recent moves by Mr Sampa portrayed him as a hired person bent on causing confusion in the PF.

Mr Sampa has applied for an exparte order of committal for contempt of court against for PF leaders namely, Nickson Chilangwa, Given Lubinda, Raphael Nakacinda and Davies Chama.

Mr Sampa wants the four alleged contemnors be committed to prison for contempt and blatant disregard of the court.

But Dr Mpombo said the brazenness with which Mr Sampa was acting gave a clear perception that the ruling party had a slight hand in the whole political shebang, desiring to cripple the entire administrative machinery of the PF.

He said the trajectory Mr Sampa was taking was clear that he was a hired gun that was plotted to distabilise the PF at all costs.

He said Mr Sampa would be perceived as one who had been paid to annihilate  PF.

Dr Mpombo said it was possible for the UPND to fan the confusion because the ruling party stood to gain the most if the PF was destroyed.

“It’s evident that the confusions have been sponsored by the UPND to bring disunity in the former ruling party,” he said.

He said that Mr Sampa was eating through the confidence of the PF.

Dr Mpombo said PF needed to find an amicable solution to the matter if it was to remain relevant to Zambia’s political discourse

He urged the PF to focus on constructive engagements and not squabbles that would not yield anything positive.

Criminals steal K60, 000 cash from Vitz

By NATION REPORTER

SUSPECTED Criminals have stolen K60, 000 cash and other valuables belonging UBABA Logistics Company after breaking into a Toyota Vitz car, which was parked at MayFair Insurance Company premises in Lusaka.

Police deputy spokesperson Danny Mwale said the cash and some company documents were left in the car while the owner was attending to some business at Mayfair Insurance Company on Lusaka’s Addis Ababa Drive.

He said the incident happened on Saturday around 16:00 hours.

He said the victim identified as Chundu Simfukwe, 38, of Lusaka’s Chelstone withdrew money from Atlas Mara Bank branch at Arcades Mall and drove to Mayfair Insurance where he parked the vehicle and left the money and company documents in the car. Mr Mwale said when Mr Simfukwe returned to the car, he discovered that the rear right passenger window had been broken and that the money, bank cheque book and other valuables were missing.

He said police visited the scene and viewed CCTV footage, which showed a grey Mercedes Benz car following Mr Simfukwe’s vehicle into the Mayfair Insurance premises.

“Two unknown male persons emerged from the car and one was seeing hitting the window to gain access.” Mr Mwale said.

And in a similar incident, unknown people broke into a Toyota Fortuner and stole a bag containing K60, 000 cash and various documents, including two cheque books.

Mr Mwale said the incident happened on Saturday between 14:00 hours and 14:45 hours at Spoon Restaurant in Olympia Park.

“Initial investigations indicate that the owner of the vehicle identified as Mariajani Lungu aged 48 of Meanwood parked the vehicle at Spoons Restaurant along Parliament Road where he was having his lunch.

“When he returned to the car, he was alerted by the guard that unknown people he did not see broke his car. Police visited the scene and found that the passenger rear window was broken to gain entry,” Mr Mwale said

He said police have instituted investigations in both incidents.

“We have observed with serious concern the increase in the number of cases involving thefts from motor vehicles. We wish to remind members of the public, especially motorists that leaving valuables in the car at any point attracts criminals who will do everything possible within their means to gain access even if the vehicle is locked,” he said.

He encouraged Motorists to make good use of their rear view mirrors to check who was following them whenever they embarked on their journeys, especially after leaving banks.
