Warriors eye top four

…as Mighty seek redemption against Kansanshi

By MICHAEL MIYOBA

KABWE Warriors will seek to maintain their perfect run when they face struggling Trident FC in today’s delayed Week-19 fixture at Shinde Stadium in Mufulira.

After their impressive 1-0 win over Forest Rangers in the last Super League fixture, Numba Mumamba’s boys will fight for maximum points to dislodge Nkwazi FC on second position.

Warriors will also seek to complete a double over Trident who they shocked 2-1 in the first-round meeting in Kabwe.

The five-times Zambian champions are fifth on the 18-team Super League table with 29 points and a win over Trident in today’s lunch time kick off at Shinde Stadium will propel them to 32 points.

Meanwhile, today’s meeting with Warriors presents Trident another opportunity to get their first victory of the season.

Since their promotion to the Super League, Trident have struggled with 10 draws and eight losses in the 18 games played so far and are bottom on the log with 10 points.

Trident will however need to come up with a perfect plan to stop Warriors who have goal scorers in all departments after Prince Mumba and defender Ocean Mushure scored in the last two wins for the Kabwe outfit.

In the second fixture of the double header at Shinde Stadium, Mufulira Wanderers will seek redemption when they host Kansanshi Dynamos after struggling with four defeats and two draws in the last six matches.

The Justin Chinama-drilled side last enjoyed a win last November when they beat Napsa Stars 2-1 in a Week-12 fixtures.

After announcing the release of eight players including captain Martin Sikaonga, it will be interesting to see whether their new signings – Djo Ntambwe, John Chilangwa and Caleb Kapembwa – will be able to add value to Shinde Stadium.

For Kansanshi Dynamos interim head coach Donewell Yobe, the match against is not going to be easy but his charges are game to fight for maximum three point as they aim to avoid the relegation zone.

“I think we are ready for the challenge. It is the second game of the second round and we have told the boys to take each game as a final so it is going to be a tough game but we have to rise to the occasion because where we are on the log we can’t afford to drop points,” Yobe said.

Yobe said Kansanshi Dynamos’ target is to ensure that they move into the top 10 spot before the break.

Kansanshi are 15th on the Super League table and a win over Wanderers today will see them escape the relegation zone to occupy 13th position.

AFCON test ends in draw

By MICHAEL MIYOBA

THE Zambia national soccer team crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) test match against Cameroon ended in a 1-1 stalemate at the King Abdalla Stadium in Saudi Arabia.

The Chipolopolo, who were the underdogs in the international friendly match were impressive and scored first through Leicester City forward Patson Daka.

It took Daka 11 minutes to give the Chipolopolo the lead. However, Cameroon got their equaliser 10 minutes later through Yongwa Ngameni, who was able to beat Chipolopolo goalkeeper Lawrence Mulenga with an easy tap in from close range.

Cameroon had started the match on a high note and almost went ahead just six minutes after kick off but were unlucky as Ngameni fluffed a chance after a cross from Jean-Charles Castelleto.

Zambia’s first real chance to get a goal came in the 10 minute when Fashion Sakala tried his luck with a shot which was parried away by the goal keeper Joseph Egobo.

Daka punished Egobo a minute after Sakala’s unfortunate miss to give Zambia the lead which was cancelled by Ngameni in the 20th minute.

Midfielder Rally Bwalya came close to restoring Zambia’s lead four minute before the half hour mark but Cameroon defender Christopher Wooh was able to deal with the danger as the first half ended in a draw.

In the second half, Avram Grant introduced Lameck Banda, Kings Kangwa and Lubambo Musonda for Sakala, Golden Mafwenta, Frankie Musonda and Edward Chilufya while Roderick Kabwe replaced the Prison Leopards defender Zephaniah Phiri.

Daka paved way for Kennedy Musonda while Kelvin Kapumbu was subbed out for Young Boys player Miguel Chaiwa.

Cameroon almost punished Zambia with a goal in the 70th minute but goal keeper Francis Mwansa who had replaced Lawrence Mulenga in goal produced a fine save to rescue the Chipolopolo from conceding.

However, Mwansa almost made a blunder in the 72nd minute when his poor pass to Chaiwa was intercepted by Anguisa whose foul on Chaiwa saved the day for the Chipolopolo.

As Zambia failed to create chances in the second half, Grant introduced Kelvin Kampamba for Stoppilla Sunzu in the dying minutes of the match.

Kemen Michel came close in the 80th minute but blasted his free kick from outside the box over the bar.

Zambia’s last attempt on goal fall to defender Roderick Kabwe whose shot went slightly over the bar after being serviced by Lameck Banda.

After concluding their international camp in Saudi Arabia, the Chipolopolo will fly to San Pedro tomorrow to kick start their Ivory Coast AFCON campaign.

The Chipolopolo play DR Congo on January 17 in San Pedro before facing Tanzania four days later. Zambia’s final Group F match is scheduled for January 24 against tournament favourites Morocco.
