New tool for precision medicine in cardiovascular disease

Researchers at Uppsala University have developed a tool that makes it possible to measure 21 biomarkers for cardiovascular disease simultaneously with great precision by means of a simple blood test. The aim is to use this type of tool to improve the prediction of cardiovascular complications and facilitate more personalized treatment for patients. It will also make it easier to monitor the effects of treatment. The study has been published in the journal PLOS One.

Pulling the plug on brain injury: Manipulating fluid flows could save lives, improve recovery post-TBI

Cerebral edema, the dangerous brain swelling that occurs after traumatic brain injury (TBI), can increase risk of death 10-fold and significantly worsen prospects for recovery in brain function. In extreme cases, surgeons will remove a portion of the skull to relieve pressure, but this has significant risks and is not viable for the vast majority of TBI cases.

Study unveils similarities between the auditory pathway and deep learning models for processing speech

The human auditory pathway is a highly sophisticated biological system that includes both physical structures and brain regions specialized in the perception and processing of sounds. The sounds that humans pick up through their ears are processed in various brain regions, including the cochlear and superior olivary nuclei, the lateral lemniscus, the inferior colliculus and the auditory cortex.

Correctional Service demands positive results from new coach

…as Lameck Banda is unveiled new Prisons Leopards head coach

By MICHAEL MIYOBA

THE Zambia Correctional Service (ZCS) command has challenged the new Prison Leopards Football Club technical bench led by Lameck Banda and his assistant Bupe Chewe to settle quickly and get down to business to help the team grind positive results.

ZCS Deputy commissioner general Bwalya Kuyomba said the ZCS Command was determined to support the new technical bench to help the team to move to a health position on the MTN Zambia Super League table.

Prison Leopards are 16th on the Super League table with 10 points from two wins, four draws and six losses.

Kuyomba said ZCS believes in the new bench consisting of youthful coaches who replaced coach Chris Kaunda who resigned ten days after he was unveiled as head coach.

“With your coming we are very positive that you are going to help change the tables. We are confident that the team will be in a safer zone. We just need about two or three games to push to a safer zone and that is our priority now so work on those and the performance will speak on its own,” Kuyomba said.

He encouraged the new coaches to feel free to engage the command any time in a quest to help the team to get to a safer zone.

“What we want is to see the team progressing not for the team to have a negative ground, we want it to be on the positive side,” he said.

Kuyomba also encouraged the new technical bench not to create divisions in the team as he will be working with people who have been at the club for a long time.

And Prison Leopards FC chairperson Steven Sikaonga challenged the new technical bench to fight to qualify the team for the CAF interclub championship.

He noted that the immediate target is to help the team to escape the relegation zone before thinking about the main objective of playing in the CAF interclub championships.

Meanwhile, Banda hailed the ZCS command and the club management for trusting him with the responsibility to lead Prison Leopards as its new head gaffer.

Banda who helped FC Muza to finish second to qualify for the CAF Confederations Cup during the 2022/2023 soccer season said he will do his best to ensure that the objectives for the season are achieved.
