UPND in government accidentally, says Davis Mwila

By NATION REPORTER

THE UPND is in government not because it had been a popular political party but purely got an accidental victory in 2021 and that is why it has failed to run the country in all the sectors as it was not ready to govern, former Patriotic Front (PF) secretary general Davis Mwila has said.

Mr Mwila said it was heart-breaking to see the UPND destroy a country that was healthy in all sectors in less than two years.

Sophia dates Dubai as Zed envoy

By LIFESTYLE REPORTER

ACTRESS Sophia Chapeshamano popularly known as Tasha from Zuba is traveling to Dubai end of April as a guest of Dubai Tourism.

Dubai, a fascinating city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been listed twice in a row as the
Most Popular Destination in the World by the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards for
destinations.

The city which is one of the most sought-after tourist destinations worldwide with its spectacular
skyscrapers, beautiful beaches, and amazing attractions which have received a lot of attention,
was identified based on the quality and quantity of reviews and ratings specific to the award from
travellers on TripAdvisor over the 12 months between November 2021 and October 2022.

Following this, Dubai has turned its eyes to Zambia East Africa, South Africa and other African countries to provide them with the yearly number of tourists visiting the city,” according to a statement.

“Given this, the tourism ministry recently employed the services of South African singer Thabsie and Kenyan celebrity Bahati as tourism ambassadors.”

For Zambia, the talented Sophia is set to play her role as a guest of the touristic hotspot. She is geared to showcase to Zambians through her social media platforms what Dubai has to offer in terms of tourism. She will be doing this through her live updates before, during and after her big visit to Dubai this month.

African ambassadors have been tasked to use their popularity to show Africans what Dubai has to offer through their own eyes courtesy of their individual experiences.

Thabsie and Bahati, who have only just left Dubai with their plus ones are set to engage in a friendly campaign called the “A to Z of Dubai” where they will, letter by letter, convince their followers to visit or revisit Dubai.

” The aim of the campaign is to show potential visitors the vast array of choice available in Dubai from the adventure to the wildlife, to all of the healthcare and the newly available options in business, family and leisure. Initial feedback suggests the campaign could be a big success with target audiences responding very well to celebrity experiences,” the statement read.

NO TO CADERISM

UPND cadres who want to take the country to the dark days when political hoodlums reigned supreme at bus stations and markets must be stopped.

They should realise that the country has moved on and no one would want to return to those dark days when criminality prevailed under the guise of being political activists.

It is in this vein that we condemn the violence perpetrated by political cadres who claimed to belong to the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) in Lusaka on Thursday afternoon.

The cadres attacked bus drivers at Soweto’s Munyaule Market which left several buses with shattered windows, windscreens and raptured tyres.

They were demanding that the bus drivers start paying them “levies.”

This resulted in mayhem at Munyaule Market in Lusaka after attacking and assaulting bus drivers who resisted to pay the illegal levies to the cadres.

There was pandemonium at the market as the said UPND cadres engaged in a free-for-all fight after they demanded to be given money by the drivers, a demand that was curtly resisted.

These so-called UPND cadres are mere criminals who should be locked up and made to face the full wrath of the law.

If they were committed members of the UPND, they would know that one of President Hakainde Hichilema’s earliest decisions was to order the removal of political cadres from extorting money from bus crews and marketeers.

This was a practice perpetuated by the former Patriotic Front cadres.  Their violent behaviour largely contributed to the party’s loss in the August 2021 general elections.

We are glad that the UPND spokesperson, Mr Cornelius Mweetwa, has not taken time to condemn the youth claiming to belong to the ruling party whilst committing illegalities in the name of the governing party.

As Mr Mweetwa noted, the UPND and President Hichilema had not changed its stance and policy on caderism and that those perpetuating the vice should know that they were on their own.

Police should therefore act swiftly and round up the ringleaders of Thursday’s fracas.  They must be made to pay for the damages they caused – smashed windows and windscreens as well as raptured tyres.

Not only did they disrupt bus operations, they also forced street vendors to abandon their stands.

Youths who attacked the Munyaule bus stand cannot claim that they have been neglected by the UPND leadership hence their attempt to make a living off levies on bus crews.

They do not have any legal right to do so and should realise that even though it was done during the PF regime, it was and remains illegal.

Being unemployed must not be used as a passport to take to crime.

As Mr Mweetwa said, the UPND had put up a number of measures that were aimed at empowering youths through the Constituency Development Fund as well as the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission.

The best they can do is to engage their leaders at ward level as to how they can access some of the empowerment programmes put in place.

Crime will not solve their problems.

Address mealie meal shortages countrywide, Silavwe urges Govt

By NATION REPORTER

GIVEN the severity of the mealie meal shortages around the Country, President Hakainde Hichilema must urgently set up a task force on maize and mealie meal to respond to the current and impending situation, Golden Party of Zambia (GPZ) president Jackson Silavwe has said.

Mr Silavwe said the current intervention measures by the Government to arrest the situation were haphazard and uncoordinated.

He proposed that government should halt all maize and mealie meal exports until the local market was fully replenished and staple food secure.

Mr Silavwe said government needed to inject more money into the Zambia National Service (ZNS) mealing plants to scale up production to meet one third of the National demand in the Short and Medium.

He also urged government to review downwards the amount of maize exports from approximately 1.2 million metric tonnes to 200 thousand metric tonnes in the Short term.

Mr Silavwe called for countering the high cost of living with low cost of doing business to give individuals and businesses increased spending power in the short and medium term.

He also said government needed to push local high quality start ups by Zambians in the agriculture sector to the tune of US$250 million in the long term.

“Government should direct all constituencies to buy a tractor from the CDF allocation for small scale farmers.Capitalise the Zambia National Service (ZNS) to commence all year round farming and progressively roll out the program to local small scale farmer’s country wide,” Mr Silavwe said.

He said mealie meal was part of the culture of the Zambian people hence it would require a cultural shock to diversify to other alternative meals.

Mr Silavwe said looking at the political connotations of the maize meal, it will at be at the peril of the Government if it does respond accordingly.
