Childhood trauma linked with greater tendency to anger in anxious or depressed patients

Scientists have found that depression and anxiety sufferers who have had a traumatic childhood tend to grow up as angry adults, and the worse the trauma, the angrier the adult. This can affect personal mental health and social interaction, but also makes it more difficult to treat the depression and anxiety. This work is presented at the European Congress of Psychiatry in Paris.

HH toasts Copper Queens World Cup qualification

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says the current success of the women’s national team has nothing to do with luck but is a product of hard work by everyone involved in the women’s game.
Hichilema thanked the women’s team, alias the Copper Queens for making the country proud by qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand from July 20-August 20.
The huge success accorded Zambia an opportunity to be part of four countries in Africa that welcomed the FIFA Women’s World Cup Trophy Tour that has embarked on a global journey ahead of the women’s biggest football extravaganza.
“I wish to thank FIFA for giving the Zambian people an opportunity to experience the tour of the trophy. The tour places our country in the spotlight in confirmation of the country’s love for the game of football and consequently it will raise people’s interest in football,” Hichilema said in a speech read by Sports Minister Elvis Nkandu.
“We have had a number of football success stories, defining moments including winning the 2012 AFCON, participating in the Women’s Africa Cup is another and the qualification to the 2023 World Cup, Copper Queens thank you very much, you don’t know what you have done, You have put smiles on the faces of Zambians,” Hichilema said.
Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Andrew Kamanga believes the FIFA Women’s World Cup trophy tour will inspire and motivate the Copper Queens as they compete at the global event this July where they are in Group C with Spain, Japan and Costa Rica.
Kamanga lauded the trophy tour stating that the milestone event called for appreciation of different stakeholders that have a played a huge role in the women’s national team success.
“We are privileged to host this prized possession, the desire to strive hard to keep it is even higher. I have no doubt our players from the Copper Queens and the technical bench are motivated so that they work hard to win it,” Kamanga said at a state dinner held at Taj Pamodzi Hotel in Lusaka.
“We are one of the four teams in Africa who have qualified to the FIFA Women’s World Cup and we feel privileged to be in the elite club in the women’s game. It’s journey did not happen overnight as the team was the only African flag bearer at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and also at the 2014 U17 World Cup in Costa Rica.”

You can’t gag Archbishop Mpundu, Mundubile tells UPND

By NATION REPORTER
THE UPND administration should accord Emeritus Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu the same respect and backing they gave him when he spoke for the people at the time the governing party was in opposition, Brian Mundubile has said.
Mr Mundubile, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament says the UPND administration should allow Archbishop Mpundu to continue speaking out freely on national issues and should never attempt to gag him.
Mr Mundubile says Archbishop Mpundu had always stood with the people, particularly the under-privileged and it would be an act of oppressiveness for President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration to begin to gag the prelate on matters affecting the country.
Getrude Imenda, the governing party deputy chief executive has taken exception to the advice by Archbishop Mpundu to address the high cost of living or risk a revolt from Zambians.
Mr. Mundubile who is a PF presidential candidate said democracy was measured by how much dissenting voices were accommodated within the political space.
“In our democracy, voices from the church, Civil Society Organizations (CSO) and many other stakeholders should be allowed to offer their views on how the best the country ought to be managed. Archbishop Mpundu was a darling of the UPND in opposition and now that they are in government, they should accord him the same respect as when he spoke against the ills of the Patriotic Front (PF),” Mr Mundubile said.
Mr. Mundubile said senior statesmen such as Archbishop Mpundu had been speaking from time immemorial against injustice, societal morals and governance issues in general.
“When UPND was in opposition they embraced Archbishop Mpundu because he spoke for the masses on societal ills. They (UPND) should not gag him now because he has not changed his position of siding with the weak in society,” he said.
Mr. Mundubile said it was strange that the UPND would want to gag Archbishop Mpundu by stopping him from speaking when he was loved by UPND while in opposition.
“That is undemocratic. Let UPND appreciate the role that Archbishop Mpundu has played in our democracy and give him space to continue speaking for the masses,” Mr Mundubile said.
Mr Mundubile said Archbishop Mpundu was among the rare clerics who had always spoken for citizens and that what the UPND government should realise was that the prelate would never be gaged by any government, not even an autocratic or oppressive regime.

North-Western in rabies outbreak

By JACKSON MAPAPAYI

AUTHORITIES in North-Western Province have disclosed that there is an outbreak of rabies in dogs and goats in the region.

Provincial Veterinary officer Dr Peter Banda said there are confirmed cases of rabies in dogs in Solwezi and Mufumbwe while Mwinilunga and Ikelenge have been confirmed with both dogs and goat’s rabies.

Dr Banda revealed that so far, six deaths in goats and four in dogs in Mwinilunga and Ikelenge have been confirmed following bites from jackals and foxes early this month.

He said in Solwezi and Mufumbwe, the outbreak is as a result of dog to dog bite transmission.

He said during field investigations in Mwinilunga and Ikelenge, it was discovered that members of the community were actually selling and slaughtering the sick goats for consumption.

“Therefore, the department hereby advises the general public to completely avoid contact with goats and any other animal showing such signs as doing so would expose them to rabies virus,” said Dr Banda.

He said the department is doing everything possible to bring the situation under control.

“To this effect, the department has taken a multi sector approach to prevent and control further sprees of the disease and preserve human life by working with the provincial and district administrations, ministry of Health, local authorities, department of national parks and wildlife, Zambia police among others to control the situation,” he said. Dr Banda also said the mobilisation towards both dogs and domestic animal vaccination has since commenced.

IT’S GAME ON – Zambia eyes double victory over Lesotho

By MICHAEL MIYOBA

AFTER reviving the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying dream with a 3-1 thumping of Lesotho last Thursday, the Zambia national soccer team will seek to complete a double victory over their Southern African rivals when the two teams face off in the second fixture of the back-to-back clashes today in South Africa.

The Group H fixture slated for Dobsonville Stadium in Johannesburg promises more exciting action as Lesotho will be seeking revenge for the painful defeat recorded in Ndola on Thursday.

Chipolopolo coach Avram Grant will seek to maintain an unbeaten record after starting his reign as Chipolopolo gaffer with a 3-1 win.

And despite having beaten Lesotho on Thursday, Grant knows it won’t be easy facing Lesotho who are still searching for their first win in the group stages.

The Chipolopolo gaffer however believes he has a good squad that can go all the way to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations.

“We have good players that can take us further but it will not be an easy job, it will be difficult but we have the material, we have the players that can take us to the AFCON we have a big squad, of course the squad can change from time to time but we have a team,” Grant said.

Meanwhile, Chipolopolo physiotherapist Hensley Chilimboyi said the team’s captain Lubambo Musonda is not fit for the reverse fixture after sustaining an injury in the home game where he was replaced by Lameck Banda.

The team is medically fit except for Lubambo Musonda who sustained a left hamstring injury,” Chilimboyi said.

With Lubambo Musonda still a doubt, Grant will look to Italian Serie A-based Lameck Banda to provide the individual brilliance that sow him come from the bench to score a brace that helped the Chipolopolo collect their second victory in Group H.

In goal, Grant is likely to maintain Toaster Nsabata with the back four of Benedict Chepeshi, Rodrick Kabwe, Frankie Musonda and Thandi Mwape who proved to be solid on Thursday.

Patson Daka is expected to lead the attack with Fashion Sakala and Klings Kangwa while Emmanuel Banda and Clatous Chama maybe deployed in midfield.

Zambia is second in the group with six points, one point behind Ivory Coast who are unbeaten with seven points while Comoros and Lesotho are third and fourth with three and one point respectively.
