Study uncovers link between chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease

Chronic kidney disease is linked to the formation of mineral deposits on blood vessel walls, known as calcification, causing cardiovascular disease. Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs)—small, enclosed structures outside cells—can transmit signaling molecules between cells, but their biological roles are not fully understood. Now, malicious sEVs originating from chronic kidney disease have been shown to play a role in blood vessel calcification through a signaling pathway called VEGFA.

Researchers identify key source of T cell ‘exhaustion’

Custom-made to attack cancer cells, CAR T-cell therapies have opened a new era in the treatment of human cancers, particularly, in hematologic malignancies. All too often, however, they display a frustrating trait inherited from the body’s own immune system cells: a drastic loss of cancer-fighting fervor known as “exhaustion.” Exhaustion is not only seen in cancer-fighting T cells but is also frequent in the setting of viral infections, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B/C viruses (HBV, HCV) and COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2).

Examining the factors influencing participation of Black and White Americans in Alzheimer’s disease biomarker research

The use of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) biomarkers such as amyloid and tau levels to facilitate early detection and improvement of treatment of AD is a high-priority research area. However, AD biomarker research necessitates diverse research participants given that the levels of biomarkers and their clinical interpretations may vary based on race. Yet, Black Americans are underrepresented in AD research despite having higher risks of developing AD compared to White Americans.
