DMMU ready for any disaster – Nalumango

By OLIVER SAMBOKO

DMMU has enough food and other resources to respond to any disaster including floods in any part of the country says Vice President Mutale Nalumango.

Ms Nalumango was responding to concerns by Mandevu Member of Parliament Christopher Shakafuswa as to why the DMMU had not responded to floods victims in Lusaka especially in his constitutiency.

She wondered why the mandevu law maker had to wait for vice president question time in parliament to raise the issue when he should have reported the issue to DMMU.

Ms Nalumango said as far as she was concerned the DMMU have distributed tents and other items to flood victims in Lusaka.

She accused Mr Shakafuswa of playing politics, saying the law maker was concerned with plight of his people he would have reported the issue a long time ago when the incident happened.

“If the Member of Parliament is really concerned he should not have to wait because within Lusaka there areas where we have given tents….. If your people are flooded, surely you sit there because there has been no rain in the past two days and you can’t say anything,” she said.

Ms Nalumango said the new dawn government is responding to all floods and ready to spend any amount of money to ensure the people are safe.

But in his submission, Mr Shakafuswa said the floods have caused huge damage to houses and crossing points which cannot be repaired using CDF because of the evaluation done by technical people revealed that the bill is above the threshold provided in the CDF for disaster response.

He said the past DMMU under the vice president office used to respond to floods by providing tents and food but that it not the case under the new dawn government.

Mr Shakafuswa said the people of Lusaka are concerned that the new dawn government is not responding to disasters adding that CDF allocation for disasters is only K700, 000 which was not enough.

“When are we going to see the DMMU coming on the ground to respond to disasters in Lusaka especially in Mandevu constituency,” he said.

George Mpombo slams US Embassy

By NATION REPORTER

The audacity and temerity displayed by the American Embassy over the arrest of gay champions is a vivid manifestation that Zambia is dancing to their apron strings which is an assault on the sovereignty of the country, former defence Minister George Mpombo has said.

Dr. Mpombo said at the rate things were unfolding, actions of the United States of America would make Zambia a pariah nation within the SADC region.

He said Zambia would be treated with a lot of suspicion and apprehension within the region which would affect the country negatively.

Dr. Mpombo said the UPND government has not taken a stern position on LGBT issues because they want to maintain the relationship that they have built with the western world.

He said in as much as the country wants to maintain a good relationship with the western world for aid, it does not need to come at the expense of selling the values and morals of the country.

Dr Mpombo said Zambia was a Christian nation and there was no need to change that position because of aid.

“What is happening has severe consequences on our country and the future. Government must realise that Zambians want them to take a very stern stance homosexual activities that have the potential to erode the moral campus of the nation,” he said.

He said the government must realise that they derived legitimacy to run this country from the people of Zambia and if they say no to something then they are obliged to follow what they people want.

Dr Mpombo said people should be wary why organizations were willing to pump in a lot of money into something that does not add value to the development of mankind.

WWF Calls for More Investment in Fisheries Management

By NAMO PHIRI

The World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature Zambia has called on the government to invest more in the management of the fisheries in order for it to reap more benefits from the sector.

WWF Country Director Nachilala Nkombo said research had shown that over 1 million people in Zambia depend on the fisheries sector which makes it a vital part even for the economic development.

Ms Nkombo also added that the fisheries sector was one of the most viable employer in the country hence the need to enhance it through massive investment for it to create more employment for Zambians.

She said the sector can also contribute to the eradication of the high levels of malnutrition which the country was being faced with.

“It is a known fact that Zambia is one of the countries with the highest levels of malnutrition, but this situation can be turned around with good management of the fisheries sector,” said Ms Nkombo

Ms Nkombo was speaking during the launch of the upper Zambezi fisheries baseline survey report in Lusaka yesterday.

And Ms Nkombo emphasised the need for more research to be done in order to appreciate the challenges that the sector is being faced with in order to bring solutions.

She said WWF believed that investing in research would help to ensure that potential hindrances are quickly recognized and dealt with.

Ms Nkombo also said the report had revealed very important policy implications that need to be paid attention to by the government and other stakeholders going forward.

And Permanent Secretary at the ministry of fisheries and livestock Dr Anna Songolo said government is keen to ensuring that fish production is increased.

Dr Nsogolo therefore said issues that are affecting the sector need to be reported in order to ensure that the government acts on time.

She commended WWF for their efforts and the report that they had released further encouraging them to release such reports on short time intervals and consistently because information is vital.

Dr Nsogolo also said the government had taken note of the challenges that were being faced by the sector and action would be taken to make improvements.
