By MICHAEL MIYOBA

Adrian Kashala has quit his position as General Secretary of the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) following his reinstatement in the Zambia Police Service.

FAZ president Andrew Kamanga announced the development in a statement issued by FAZ Communications Manager Sydney Mungala.

Kamanga confirmed that Kashala, who was in 2020 allegedly retired from the police service “in national interest” by the Patriotic Front regime has been reinstated as Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police and deputy Commanding Officer Paramilitary Battalion Unit.

“Following the reinstatement of Mr. Adrian Kashala in the Zambia Police where he has been appointed as Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police and deputy Commanding Officer Paramilitary Battalion Unit, he will no longer serve as FAZ General Secretary,” Kamanga said.

He hailed the former Nkwazi FC chief for his contribution to the beautiful game and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to utilising his experience in various areas of the game. “On behalf of the FAZ executive, I wish to thank Mr. Kashala for his selfless service to the game. We will however be open to utilising his experience in various areas of our game as he is an asset,” Kamanga said.

FAZ has confirmed that during the transition period, FAZ Registrar Iva Lengwe will act as General Secretary for administrative convenience until the position is filled.

Kashala has been General Secretary from September 2018 and previously served as deputy before he was elevated when Ponga Liwewe resigned as FAZ General Secretary in March 2018.

Meanwhile, FAZ has secured two international friendly matches for the Copper Queens for the April FIFA Window against the Republic of Korea as part of continuous preparations for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

FAZ said in a statement that the venue for the two friendly matches will be advised in due course with the dates being April 7 and 11.

Earlier, FAZ announced that it had also clinched an international friendly match which will see the Copper Queens play the Republic of Ireland on Thursday, June 22 at Tallaght Stadium in Dublin.

South Korea is in Group H alongside Morocco, Colombia, and Germany and a match against Zambia will be an opportunity to face African opposition as part of preparations for the FIFA World Cup.

Korea Republic is ranked 15th in the world while Zambia is perched in the 81st position on the global charts.

Be balanced in dealing with China, US; gov’t urged

By NAMO PHIRI

It is very important that we develop a striking balance in dealing with both China and the United States in the country’s developmental agenda to show that we are declaring our sovereignty in as much as we try to develop a relationship and choose partners in development, Lukashya Member of Parliament George Chisanga has advised President Hakainde Hichilema.

Mr Chisanga said China was one of the biggest lenders such that even America itself where the UPND were seemingly leaning towards was also borrowing from the Chinese government.

He said it would be impossible for the government to pursue any developmental agenda without including China.

“If there is any developing country in the world that would decide to pursue its development agenda without involving China then those plans will go up to nowhere because China has helped many developing countries,” said Mr Chisanga

Mr Chisanga said China was friendlier with developing countries as compared to any other country hence the need to ensure that they are not taken out of the equation.

“It is not disputable that China is our cooperating partner and a long term friend. Right from the early years of independence China has always come forth to help this nation when there was need,” said Mr Chisanga

Mr Chisanga said the failure by the UPND government to engage China not only on the issue of debt restructuring but also the relationship of the country with the Peoples Republic of China was a huge concern which needed to be addressed by the president.

The government he said engaging China would also act as an indication to show that Zambia is not choosey as to whom that incorporate in achieving their developmental agenda.

He said evidence of how many times the president has traveled out of the country had been documented but never for once has he ever bothered to pay a visit to China.

Mr Chisanga said certain countries do not have any other country’s needs and prosperity at heart because there first agenda is to always make sure that they exploit others of their mineral resources and any other assets as well as imposing a political system that seems to be in tune with theirs.

Zambia on cyclone red alert

By NATION REPORTER

Zambia has been put on the United Nations Cyclone red alert with the country expected to be hit by cyclone Freddy.

According to a security advisory by UN resident coordinator Beatrice Mutali latest reports from SADC Climate services centre indicate that in the coming days, intense tropical cyclone Freddy was expected to make landfall in different parts of the Southern African region including Zambia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Botswana, Eswatini and South Africa which would involve heavy rainfall with flashfloods.

She said the situation may occasion a high risk of dangerous storm surge, flooding and strong damaging wind especially in locations on the storm’s path in Zambia and indications were that the Southern Province would be most affected and some parts of central and eastern provinces.

“While the Zambia Meteorological Department and the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit are coordinating with counterparts in other neighbouring countries to monitor the situation it has become necessary to alert all UN personnel accordingly for the needed caution, vigilance as well as minimization of movements,” she said.
